Make your bed…styled

Didn’t your mother ever tell you to make your bed and you were always like, “but why, I am just going to sleep in it tonight”.  I know that thought has crossed my mind a time or two before.  In all honesty, making your bed first thing in the morning is actually a really positive and productive way to start the day.  As Naval Admiral William McRaven, the commander of U.S. Special Operations, put it best: “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another,” he said. “By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter.”  Among other reasons, it helps keep the rest of the room tidy which can improve your mood and stress level.

So why not have a little fun with this chore and style your bed like a pro.  Here are some tips to achieve that styled bed that you see on Pinterest, Interior design blogs, etc… it really is easy once you know how.

This layout shows you how many standard pillows, euro pillows, and throw/accent pillows you can use for the size of bed you are styling.  This guide is a great reference.  But remember, when styling, what makes it great is that you make it personal.

Now let us move on to some pro tips and tricks:

  1. Make the bed with the flat sheet wrong side up and plenty of room at the top to fold over your top blanket or quilt
  2. Use a pair of large Euro square pillows to add height and texture.  A good pointer is to match the Euro shams to the duvet or quilt. When styling a king size bed use 3 Euro shams as listed in the layout above.
  3. Use pillow shams instead of pillowcases for a finished look.  Match them to your sheets or use them to layer in more color and texture.  When styling a king size bed use king-size shams and pillows.
  4. Using lots of layers (which is great for warmth depending on seasons) and adding a quilt or blanket is a must.  Place your duvet on top turned up, halfway down with the quilt laying flat or turned down over it.  Or fold your duvet into thirds at the foot of the bed.  You can introduce a new texture, color or pattern such as cotton or velvet.
  5. Use boudoir + throw pillows to layer in texture and color…think velvet, beaded, silk, embroidered or even furry.  Bolster pillows are a great option especially for king size beds.
  6. Add a soft throw blanket at the foot of the bed for a final touch.  This is a great way to break up the expanse of a bed.

Bonus tips:

  • For extra plush use two inserts into your duvet cover (or try using one size larger).
  • Add a featherbed beneath your fitted sheet for extra softness
  • If you really want to impress, try ironing your sheets.
  • Instead of putting all pillows upright, try laying a few flat and then resting Euro shams against and upright for height.  The look leaves the bed full and balanced.

The look of layering:

The all-white bed is a summer classic, crisp and inviting all year long.  Remember to layer with texture to enhance the style.

The monochromatic bed is layering tonal versions of one color in different materials and textures.  This look is very sophisticated and can really pop.  For example, try linen sheets paired with a silk quilt and velvet duvet.  Adding small texture and pattern to the throw pillows.

The colorful bed a bright colorful bed is a cheery way to spruce up your bedroom.  If you choose a bold pattern or color for your duvet opt for solid or white sheets, and a few solid throw pillows to balance it out.

The soft patterned bed a way to make an impression is the duvet cover.  Choose a soft, mild pattern and then pick one color or neutral to use on the sheets and pillows.  Pump up texture with throw pillows and throw blankets.

Lastly, let me leave you with some styled bed inspo…

Hope you all have a great weekend!  Anything fun planned??  After all this bed talk, and exhaustion from my kiddos being home this summer I may just stay in bed…haha!

Best,

Jen

4 tips for your outdoor oasis

Hey, there happy weekend!!  We have literally been outside all day today as it was a perfect Saturday!!  My favorite way to spend the weekend is out in our backyard as a family hanging out.  We did some yard work followed by sprucing up our patio and ending with a delicious meal outside. While being outside today I have discovered a few good tricks to really bring out the best in your outdoor oasis.

This is such a good idea and fun way to style a bench.  Using a blanket or even an old rug, as my favorite stylist Emily Henderson, has done in the picture above.  It adds such warmth and texture to any space.  This will also be so much more comfortable to sit on for time spent eating and sharing.

A fun and unique way to liven up your outdoor space is to add a festive umbrella.  I love the first picture up top with the fringed umbrella from Anthropologie.  If spending $$ on an umbrella isn’t an option, try buying an umbrella second hand from Craigslist or your local thrift shop.  Purchase some fringe at your local fabric or craft store and sew on your fringe.  If sewing isn’t your jam you could try using fabric glue.  The second picture gives you an idea of how amazing it can look to add some light at twilight under your umbrella.  Gives so much warmth and would be fabulous for a romantic dinner.

I found this idea from yet again Emily Henderson.  I seriously have such a style crush on her.  In the picture above she hangs a pendant from a tree.  If you have all your ducks in a row and can hang a pendant from a tree and have wiring capabilities then this idea is PERFECT for you.  If you don’t have any electricity nearby then try using a pendant with burning candles to give you your evening glow.

DIY an outdoor fireplace for those chilly nights.  The possibilities are endless, anything that is safe to withstand heat a.k.a. fire is a potential candidate.  Maybe an old iron cauldron like the second picture above.  Have you recently cut down a tree?  Hollow it out and line with metal for your next firepit.  Having a unique centerpiece such as a DIY fireplace really sets you apart from the rest.  A definite conversation starter.

Do you have any fun, unique ideas that bring out the best in your outdoor space?  If so please share!  Happy outdoor living!!

Best,

Jen

Happy Earth Day

Hey everyone Happy Earth Day!!  In honor of mother nature, I am writing about sustainable furniture today.  It is crucial that we all start taking better care of our home; Earth, as she has taken such good care of us.  If we continue to want to see her beauty and all she has to offer we need to be more mindful.  Mindful in just about everything we do every day all day.  Things like can you ride your bike instead of drive the car to work today? Or can you use and consume less?  The options are endless.

So today I want to choose the subject of sustainable furniture.  Choosing eco-friendly furniture is just one of many ways you can show love for Mother Earth.  I am sharing a list of companies with not only eco-friendly furniture, some of them finding ways to give back.

First I think I have to mention that re-using or recycling a piece of furniture is always a good way to go green.  By not wasting the furniture and then consuming more you are giving it and mother nature a second chance.  Another way to recycle or upcycle a piece of furniture is from your local thrift shop or flea market.  There are usually amazing deals to be found, and sometimes with a little DIY and creativity, they are better than before.  Great and easy suggestions for simply living eco-friendly

Now on to the sustainable brands:

  • Joybird: Eco-friendly, made-to-order, fair wages and health benefits for craftspeople, no harsh chemicals or flame retardants is what’s behind this brand. Plus, for each item sold, Joybird plants more trees than were used in the manufacturing of that item in an effort to help preserve the rainforests. Online store only.
  • VivaTerre: upholds sustainability and integrity throughout the design and manufacturing process of their truly globally-inspired, modern furniture. Online store only.
  • Stem: Eco-friendly, made in the USA, upcycled and organic materials, customizable. Their responsible manufacturing process takes place in the USA, cutting down on carbon emissions. Online store only.
  • ABC Home: Eco-friendly, ethically and sustainably sourced, fair-trade.  Online store only.
  • West Elm: FSC-certified, made in the USA, Fair-Trade, eco-friendly. Online and instore.
  • Crate and Barrel: Dining & home office collections featuring eco-friendly, FSC-certified, reclaimed wood, and sustainable bamboo. Online and instore.

Inmod: Bedroom, lighting, storage, and children’s featuring eco-friendly, made in the USA. Online store.

My goal is to strive to do a few green things every day.  Little steps to make a big difference.  Happy Monday and Happy Earth Day!!

Best,

Jen

Mother Nature’s Inspiration

Spring is here!! Yay finally the sun has to come out to play here in Boise after weeks of rain.  I love the feel of refresh and renew the spring season brings along with it.  Such a good time to do a little decorating, rearrange some pieces, put winter away and bring out spring.  Fun vibrant colors and textures are always a good sight to see after a winter of neutrals.  My favorite way to get started in project refresh is to step outside and really see what’s happening in nature.  I love being outside, it brings a weird calm that really grounds me.  So I always try to incorporate natural organic pieces from my surroundings as well as gather inspiration from the great outdoors.  That’s exactly what I did today, in my own backyard, I found the inspiration I was looking for.  Let me share it with you.

When I saw this in my backyard I immediately noticed the brilliant colors coming together.  Mostly hues in the neutrals here but fun pops of color all around.  You can see the bright pink flowers on the moss-stained tree trunk.  The black shadows, the warm brown in the fence.  The green trees all around with bright blue skies and fluffy white clouds.  I mean the texture and color combo is perfection.  Way to go mother nature!!  Inspiration calling me I came inside and created this scene.

Do you see the resemblance?  The neutral background of white walls, warm brown credenza, black frames paired with the black chair.  And of course so many pops of the vibrant blues, pinks, greens and so many more.  I may have over embellished on the color but why not I am feeling super cheery and colorful as it is SPRING!

To sum it all up, I just want to put it out there that anything can become inspiration.  When you feel stuck in a rut, go somewhere that you enjoy and love, look around to find your next color scheme.  Oh and of course I can’t forget to mention I  grabbed a few twigs to bring inside as they are uniquely gorgeous, and I smile every time I see them.  That’s all for Friday’s tip, have a fantastically, beautiful and inspired weekend.
